Friday 03 July 2009 Wilbur's Wipeout 3/07/2009 4:00:00 AM On a beautiful winter Saturday afternoon our recently retired - and already well travelled - Wilbur Whyte showed his very classy all round golf game with a well compiled score of 41 stableford points. With that score he took the A grade voucher and had the best overall score of the day. In B Grade it was Joe Orifice’s 40pts that stood the test and in C Grade the wily skills of Peter Anderson survived a countback situation to give him victory from Norm Napper. Jarrod Porter, Bob Johnson and Chris Simpson also played some excellent golf in accumulating 39pts in their respective grades. (Saturday results) A Grade: Wilbur Whyte 41pts B Grade: Joe Orifice 40pts C Grade: Peter Anderson 39pts (ocb) Nearest the Pins: D Ward 11th hole and P Anderson 16th hole Ball Comp to 36ocb: W Whyte, J Orifice, P Anderson, J Porter, N Napper, R Johnson, C Simpson, S Porter, M Barnes, P White, M Greep, B Greig, D Douglas, J Bray, R McDonald, W McDonald, T Paul. CCR 65. Number of Players 59. (Sunday 4BBB multiplier) That anti-friendship form of golf called 4BBB Multiplier was the format for Sunday. It’s all about zero arithmetic, where one player playing well is sunk by his partner playing not so well. For example: 4 x 0 = 0! You get the picture. Two chaps playing half decent golf remain friends, eg 2 x 2 = 4. Much better. The father and son combo of Sam and Jarrod of the Porter Clan were smiling “best of friends” winners with 88pts – 2pts clear of P Bourke and D Glauis. In third spot was the team of Stephen Greenwood and Brad Porter. Nearest the pin went to Craig Chapman on the 16th hole. (Mid-week Comp) A Grade: Mark Holt 21pts had an outstanding nine holes in beating Chris Simpson 18pts. B Grade: Roger Nielson’s 21pts was good enough by one point from Kevin Mann. Ball Comp to 18pts ocb: K Mann x 2, S Dobbin, C Simpson, K Reidy, D Hanrahan, I Lumsden. (Dads Army) With a few of the troops on overseas postings and others laying low, there were only the ten battle ready souls on the first tee last Thursday. Most recent reduction in numbers came about when Doug Oldfield snapped his leg in two places, having slipped while walking from the 16th green. To Doug and Les Puckett, the troops and fellow Club members send their best wishes for speedy recoveries. Bernie Puckett sneaked through the back fence with the warm winter’s morning having lured him from hibernation. His 18pts was plenty good enough to win the money from Graham Howlett’s 16pts and Ken Reidy’s 15. (Coming events) Saturday July 4: The all important Bob Rogers Guzzlers Mug for July – stroke event; quarter-final day in Club Matchplay Championship. Sunday July 5: Individual Stableford. Saturday July 11: Duddleston Cup – 4BBB Stableford. Sunday July 12: Super Sunday open event stroke.
Wednesday 01 July 2009 Drinking, Gambling, and Golf .
A man was walking in the city, when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking bum who asked him for a couple of dollars for dinner.
The man took out his wallet, extracted two dollars and asked, "If I gave you this money, will you take it and buy whiskey?"
"No, I stopped drinking years ago," the bum said.
"Will you use it to gamble?"
"I don't gamble. I need everything I can get just to stay alive."
"Will you spend the money on greens fees at a golf course?"
"Are you NUTS! I haven't played golf in 20 years!"
The man said, "Well, I'm not going to give you two dollars. Instead, I'm going to take you to my home for a terrific dinner cooked by my wife."
The bum was astounded.
"Won't your wife be furious with you for doing that? I know I'm dirty, and I probably smell pretty bad."
The man replied, "That's okay. I just want her to see what a man looks like who's given up drinking, gambling, and golf."
Friday 26 June 2009 Weekend Golf Winners in Yass 26/06/2009 4:00:00 AM Low markers Peter Timmer and Michael Carey accounted for mid markers Bob Johnson and Bill Scheffler on Saturday, while Chris Simpson got the better of the rain reduced small field on Super Sunday. Saturday Ambrose Fifty-two players turned out for the scheduled two person ambrose event on a calm and cool Saturday. An excellent score of net 56.25 by quality golfers Peter Timmer and Michael Carey gave the duo a clear margin of 2.5 shots from the runners-up Bob Johnson and Bill Scheffler. Nearest the pins: Bill Scheffler on the 11th and Peter Brady on the 16th. Ball Comp to 63.5: P Timmer, M Carey, R Johnson, W Scheffler, G Fleming, W Mackay, B Roberts, P Doyle, T Mason, B Luff, S Quadraccia, M Masters, P White, B Abbey, J Brady, P Brady. Super Sunday A beautifully timed spot of rain on Saturday was wonderful for crop and pasture sowing with falls around the 10 to 15 mil generally across the district. It’s hard to please everyone all of the time and a few Sunday golfers were left lamenting a fine 18 holes of golf. It was decided the ‘super’ prize would go to nearest the pin on the 16th hole and one M Crilley was happily $70 better off for his one rewarding swing. In the overall contest, with every shot counted, it was a countback between A-graders Chris Simpson, Kym Butler and Josh Paton to decide the winner. Chris got the judge’s nod for his net 66 and a superior back nine. Kym won the best gross score for his fine 76 off the Pings. CCR 67. Mid-week comp A-grader John Bewick with 22pts got the voucher with a countback win from Kevin Mann. In B grade Paul Turner 22pts had a safe margin from Ian Lumsden 20pts on a count back. Balls to 18ocb: R Hill, B Abbey, W Scheffler, S Curtis, R Neilson, B Brooker, A McIntyre, B Puckett. Dads Army With Captain Jack back on hand the troops were on their best behaviour on a frosty Thursday morning. Reckon the old fellas must be sick of giving their pension money to the “Murrumbateman Banker” Kevin Mann – he seems to get back from holidays and in no time at all has accumulated more funds and is off again! Merv Wright and Ken Burden at least got a ball each for turning up. Coming events Saturday June 27: Individual Stableford Sunday June 28: 4BBB Stableford Multiplier Saturday July 4: The Bob Rogers Clothing Co Guzzlers Mug for July (stroke event). * Golf News by “Power Fade”
Wednesday 24 June 2009 Yass Golf News GOLF NEWS BY “POWER FADE” WITH A BIG THANK YOU TO “GRANDDADDY” REPORTING IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS. 19/06/2009 4:00:00 AM The classy combination of Paul Matthews and Jamie Stanford took out the overall win in the Yass Auto Pro sponsored Foursomes Championship last Sunday. Their 27 hole score of 105 was three over par and good enough on the day. Tim Smith and David Field took out the best net prize with 98 from Phillip White and Jarred Porter on 99.5. Nearest the Pins went to Sam Porter on the 11th hole and Wayne Wilson 16th hole. Ball Comp to 102.75: T Smith, D Field, P Matthews, J Stanford, P White, J Porter, R Field, J Goldsworthy, W Mackay, G Fleming. Saturday stableford After a -5 degree morning on Thursday and the coldest maximum in 43 years on Friday, the regulars were a little “cold shocked” and only 49 of them turned out for the regular Saturday round. In actual fact it really was quite a pleasant winter day and those who were there enjoyed the conditions. With the low numbers only two grades were up for grabs. The ‘young guns’ Brad Porter and Brad Luff were top of the pile in A Grade with 39pts, with Mr Porter getting the nod on a countback. Phillip White and Mike Greep were next best on 38pts. At the other end of the age spectrum it was Dad’s Army rep Peter Anderson who picked up the B Grade voucher with 38pts on a countback from Ted Nelson. Nearest the pins: Brad Luff on the 2nd and Mick Barnes on the 16th hole. Ball Comp to 35: B Luff, P White, M Greep, P Anderson, E Nelson, R Johnson, D Douglas, R Perceval, R Field, K Butler, B Abbey, B Roberts, S Porter. CCR 66. Mid-week comp Wilbur Whyte, 20 pts, took the major prize from Steve Curtis on 19pts. There was only the one grade in a cold week. Ball comp: M Lawrence, C Phillips, P Brady, J Aravavis and L Eikenhout. Dads Army On that -5 degree Thursday morning it was indeed ‘brassy’ for the seven snow troopers who showed up. Top iceberg was Graham Howlett who got the nod on a countback from Clive Phillips, both with 18pts. On a show of very few cold hands the start time has been amended to 8.30am until further notice. Christmas in July The Golf Club’s Annual Christmas in July is scheduled for Saturday July 25 from 7pm. Lots of fun is expected and those who attend will enjoy a three course dinner. Members and guests $30 per head, children $15 and under 5s for free. Tickets are available at the club until July 19. Phone 62261894. Coming events Saturday June 20: Two person Ambrose Sunday June 21: Super Sunday stroke (Open) Saturday June 27: Stableford Sunday June 28: 4BBB stableford multiplier Golf News by “Power Fade” with a big thank you to “Granddaddy” reporting in the last two weeks.
Friday 12 June 2009 Foggy start for Guzzler 12/06/2009 4:00:00 AM The ever popular Bob Rogers sponsored Guzzlers Mug was contested on Saturday with fifty-nine players facing the starter. Scoring was its usual high standard with A-grader Peter Hewitt claiming the Guzzlers Trophy and voucher with a very fine 77-14-63. Sam Porter brought in the best gross for the day. D O’Brien won B grade with 79-15-64, which would have been good enough to win on most days. Daniel Garland took home the money in C grade with a card that read 100-29-71. Ball competition went down to 69 on a countback. The following players collected a ball each: P Hewitt, D O’Brien, G Butcher, J Roche, J Goldsworthy, P. Auld, M Townsend, M Baines, S Evans, K Stephan, S Porter, B Cooper, M Garland, S Quadicca, M Creep, D Oldfield, B Roberts, R Johnson. Nearest the pin: J Heggart on the eighth hole and B Rogers on the 16th. Putting comp: G Fleming 26, M Holt 28 and J Goldsworthy 28. (Stableford) Only eleven players fronted on Sunday for the stableford event. As such there was no voucher on offer and three players collected a ball each. M Carey, M Partridge and P Timmer each pocketed a ball thanks to handy rounds. S Partridge finished nearest the pin on the 16th hole. (Monday Pro competition) Ten brave souls faced the rather inclement weather for a round on Monday which resulted in a win for D Bush on a countback with 41 pts from K Pye. Other noteworthy rounds were had by B Luff (37pts) and D Reis (34pts). Sharp shooter Mark Holt finished nearest the pin on the 16th. (Mid-week comp) First: A McIntyre on a countback from B Puckett. McIntyre took home the $15 credit, while Puckett scored two balls. Ball competition: J Ryan, D Oldfield and A McIntyre all with 19pts. (Dad’s Army) It would seem that the weather was the winner on Thursday as only nine hardy souls turned up to play the Dad's Army Comp. You might say it wasn't a great day for golf although it didn't stop Mr President Peter Doyle from walking away with the money after scoring a fine 19 pts. It looks as if the "Preso" is over his ankle injury. The next two best scores came from Doug Oldfield and Merv Wright, both of whom scored 15 points and a ball each. Good golfing ‘boys’, until next week when the weather may be a little bit kinder than it was on Monday! (Coming events) Saturday June 13: individual Stableford Sunday June 14: 27 hole foursomes championships for both men and women; working bee check with Phil White Saturday June 20: two person Ambrose Sunday June 21: Super Sunday! Individual stroke open event Members and Friends are reminded that the very popular “Christmas in July” Dinner will be held on the July 25 at the Yass Golf Club. Get in early and book through the club as tickets for this annual night will sell very quickly. *** Golf News was compiled by “Granddaddy” in the absence of “Power Fade” from the usually reliable sources.
Friday 05 June 2009 Chapman clubs the field 5/06/2009 4:00:00 AM Sixty players took to the fairways in the stableford event around the Worth Street course on Saturday. Some very good scores were recorded, the best of which was posted by C grade’s Blake Chapman with a stunning 45 points. You had better check-in with the handicapper before your next outing, Blake! D Bush collected the winner’s voucher in A grade with 39 points on a count-back, while Ian Bluett prevailed in B grade with a fine 39 points. Ball competition: B Chapman, D Bush, M Barrie, I Bluett, G Miller, B Greig, P Brasly, B Porter, B Roberts, R Johnson, W Scheffler, S Morgan, J Byrne, J Brady, M Holt, P Anderson, K Stephan. Nearest the pin went to Wilbur Whyte on the second hole and Gary Brooker on the seventeenth. On Sunday May 31 twenty-two players flocked to the course for a stroke event. A visitor from across the border, S Crilley, took the spoils with a fine 63. Ball competition: S Crilley, R Nielson, J Brady, J Arvdias, W Vickery, R Ferguson each won balls. Nearest the pin went to John Brady. (Mid-week comp) A grade: F Kelly 23pts B Grade: I Bluett 24pts Ball competition: K Reidy, G Howlett, K Mann, I Lumsden, G Storey, W Whyte, I Lumsden, J Bewick. (Dad’s Army) A slightly foggy morning cleared and made for perfect golf-playing conditions for the troops. It seems fairly new recruit John Bewick has set about lowering his handicap in fine style with a very good card of 22pts to take out the loot this week. Mr President Peter Doyle collected another ball with a fine 18 points, as did Ian Bluett with 17 and Ken Reidy with 15. Until next week, good golfing ‘boys’. (Coming events) Saturday June 6: Bob Rodgers “Guzzlers Mug” individual stroke. Sunday June 7: individual stableford Monday June 8: Queen’s Birthday pro comp. Members and friends are reminded the Golf Club’s annual “Christmas in July” dinner will be held on July 25. Don’t leave it too late: get a group together and book a table. There will be more reminders in future Golf
Wednesday 03 June 2009 Payne the name of the game 3/06/2009 4:00:00 AM On Wednesday May 27, sixteen played in the three-ball-best-ball Ladies Classic. Five teams contested the event with Trudy Payne, Maureen Bray and Penny Connell triumphing with a classy score of seven over. The club also ran an individual stableford event, with June Kemp’s 37 points good enough to snap-up division one honours and Ann McIntosh’s 48 points enough to claim division two. Julia Genders finished nearest the pin on both the 15th and 16th holes. Geraldine Doyle won the raffle. Ann McIntosh was in splendid form during her return round to golf. No doubt her handicap tumbled. Welcome back to golf, Ann. Ball competition winners: Maureen Bray, Trudy Payne, Janine Howard, Julia Genders and Gillian Storey. Sue Bullman and Lyn Donely played the final of the Ann Walker Shield. The match was won by Lyn Donely. Congratulations to both Lyn and Sue. Today, June 3, all those interested in having a swing will compete in a medal round. Nearest the pin for the month of June will be on the 11th hole. There is a sheet on the board waiting for the names of those interested in competiting at the foursomes championships on June 14. Friday 29 May 2009 Auld feet away from a free car 29/05/2009 4:00:00 AM The powers that be revved up the old club last weekend with big stakes and big fanfare. Members responded by turning up in large numbers and playing some excellent golf. Businesses of Yass came forth with generous sponsorship in difficult times, with almost $1000 put on the line over the two days. A Toyota Yaris was up for grabs thanks to Luff Motors. The challenge lay on the short par 16th hole on Saturday with Peter Auld going closest to driving it away with a shot that went ever so close to falling in the hole. Oh well Peter, better to have the $110 nearest the pin prize then nothing! The quality golf was led once again by the irrepressible Sam Porter who fired a three under par round of 65 on Saturday to win A Grade with 43 wonderful points. It was awesome golf from our local milkman. George ‘NAB’ Manson had two days down time and produced significant income at Worth Street with a first and second place. Tony Bayley was self inspirational in compiling his big victory in Saturday C grade with 43 points. Talented A grader Paul Matthews had 40 pts and the best gross score of 69 (ignoring Sam’s 65) on Saturday before coming out on Sunday to produce the best gross score again. And he eagled the heartbreak hill fifth hole! Kim Stephan was rightfully delighted with his 42pt Saturday effort and Mick ‘BBC’ Barnes won Sunday A grade with a net 64. All six nearest-the-pin prizes on Saturday carried with them $110 Yass business rewards. Joe Cooke picked up a similar prize for longest drive on the 18th hole – a mammoth effort into a very strong headwind. Well done committee on organising a great weekend. Thanks in particular to Pro Kirk, Luff Motors, CRT of Yass, Vista on the Green Restaurant, Yass Computers, Millers Pharmacy and to the players. (Dads Army) The Thursday troops stayed dry despite promising cloud and after the mandatory nine holes it was Ian Bluett who won the big end of the prizemoney. His 18pts was good enough on countback from Club President Peter Doyle in his first appearance after enforced layoff. Doug Oldfield, Graham Howlett and Ken Reidy shared the balance of the spoils. Captain Jack advises that the starting time has been amended to 8am. Be early! Tuesday 19 May 2009 Yass triple treat champions 15/05/2009 4:00:00 AM Last Sunday was a big day for the locals of the golfing world. It was the day of our team’s third consecutive appearance in the Edwards Dunlop Shield grand final for the ACT and Southern District Golf Association pennant championship. It was also the 50th anniversary of that same shield competition. Could our local reigning champion team of two years make it a “three peat” and join Tully Park, Yowani and Queanbeyan as the only other clubs to have done so in the history of the shield? Oh yes they could. In fading light Mark Barrie managed to hold his 1 up advantage to the final hole and with his victory the team was the crowned 2009 champions. His was the fourth and sealing win. Tim Kelly had already triumphed 2/1, Adam Danilczak was in the bag with a 3/2 victory and Jim Byrne was also in the winner’s stall at 1 up. Matt Townsend was square in his match and waiting nervously as to whether he was required to continue on in the near darkness to achieve an outcome. Sam Porter was all tied-up coming down the 18th when he was pulled from the course with the team victory finally realised. Phew! Captain Matthew Waters fought to the wire in going down by the solitary one hole and Mick Bell played at reserve and met a very good opponent on the day. Those two slight ‘hiccups’ were of no concern at all with the final score line reading five matches to two-and-a-half. The Yass Golf Club and the team wish to thank the above named players as well as John Goldsworthy, Rodney Bullman, Graham Fleming and Russell Watchorn, who all played in the team during the year, and Buck Harmer for nursing the team throughout. A special thank you must go to Graham and Helen Fleming of Yass Windscreens and Glass for their valued team sponsorship. Congratulations and commiserations to the Duntroon Royal Military College team who made it to their first grand final. The players and connections celebrated with dinner in the Club House dining room and swayed to the rhythm of Chad Croker til very, very late! (The pennant year) It really was an impressive year’s performance put forward by a small, struggling club against the might of the city. Our juniors led the way with their powerful first time in thirty odd years victory. Theirs was a win in the category where the best junior golfers in the district compete against each other without handicap advantage – an incredible victory. The B pennant team have done their triple treat and made it two pennants for Yass this year. The junior encourage shield team made it to the grand final after playing very well all season. The Masters team missed out on the semi-finals by one-half of one-match on the day that mattered most. They had won most overall matches in their division during the season. The A reserves performed way above their weight and missed out narrowly on progressing through to the semis. Congratulations on an excellent pennant year to all players, managers, coaches and supporters. Well done indeed! (4BBB championship) The Elders sponsored Yass four ball-best-ball Championship has been a little overshadowed this week by the pennant headline story – but these are the results. Winners gross: David Field and Tim Smith 66. Runners-up: Sam Porter and Paul Matthews 67 ocb. Net winners: Les Cox and Barnet Greig 78 – 57 ocb. Runners-up: Mark Garland and Matt Broers 71 – 57. Nearest the pins: D Garland 8th and G Fleming 16th. Ball competition to 61: L Cox, B Greig, M Broers, D Field, T Smith, D Garland, J Bray, M Bell, T Bayley, M Waters, A Danilczak, A Grieve, W Vickery, R Bullman, B Burden. (Sunday stableford) Winner: M Taylor 43pts. Ball competition to 34pts: M Taylor, E Mongan, J Paton, J Cooke, N Henderson. (Mid-week comp) A Grade: K Mann 22pts beat E Mongan 21pts ocb. B Grade: C Phillips 24pts won from I Lumsden 22pts. Balls to 19: R Perceval, J Aravis, K Mann, A McIntyre, B Partridge, G Howlett, K Reidy, J Bewick. (Dad’s Army) Another glorious Thursday morning for the troops and more loot for Rod Perceval with his 19pts. Ian Bluett was one point off the pace while Kevin Mann and Doug Oldfield got the last two balls on offer. The troops were giving a combined pat on the back to Edgar Mongan for his mid week hole in one. I remember another one not so long ago Edgar! [April 19, 2008 to precise] You are the miracle man for sure. (Coming events) Saturday May 16: Derek McLean Memorial stroke event Sunday May 17: Patrons day 4BBB Stableford incorporating qualifying for Walker Cup and NSW Mixed Championship. Don’t forget the working bee Sunday 8am til 1pm – or as much time as you can spare. Also, don’t forget the Luff Motors Hole in One Stableford on Saturday May 23 – a new car? Kemp nets in Darmody 13/05/2009 4:00:00 AM On Wednesday May 6, 19 ladies played a stroke round for the right to win the monthly medal. A beautiful day was complemented by some beautiful golf. June Kemp triumphed in division one over Marion Darmody on a count-back. Both players finished with scores of nett 69. Lyn Donely won division two with a final nett score of 70. Judy Broers was the cleanest with the putting broom, winning the division one putting award with 28. Kay Moebus took out the division two putting award with 29. Ball competition: Marion Darmody, Lainie Eikenhout 70, Judy Broers 71, Isobel Burden 71 and Trudy Payne 73. The club was happy to welcome two new players in Lynell Green and Kathy Farnell. Both should have handicaps soon and we will all be delighted to see them again. Today we will be holding a stableford competition. At Queanbeyan last Friday Yass played Yowani in the Bronze Shield Pennant. Trudy Payne 18 beat J Hare 23 (1 up); Maureen Bray 22 lost to S Wickham 25 (5/4); Lainie Eikenhout 25 lost to V Tait 25 (8/6); Isobel Burden 26 beat S Heffernan 26 (4/3); Sue Bullman 32 squared with S Harvey 28. The match was tied.
