Field, Field and Watchorn champs
20 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM For three rounds during the year the three person ambrose teams sought to qualify for the big end of year final. Nine of the ten qualifiers were able to field their teams and best of the nine was the classy combination of Robert Field, David Field and Russell Watchorn with their 58-6-52 winning score. In second spot was the team of Wayne Wilson, Blake Partridge and Wayne Vickery and next best were Mal Marshall, Barnie Greig and Les Cox. Nearest the pins went to B Partridge, S Kelly and M Garland. A big thank you to sponsor Retravision and to all the golfers who participated. The main golf talking point continues to be the amazingly high scores being recorded. Last Sunday 41pts did not win a ball and on the Saturday 38pts failed to do so. The startling transition from moist fairways to run-a-mile dry fairways has been rapid and dramatic and in many cases second shots on par fours have been reduced to chips or putts for the longer hitters. The CCR will not come below 65 and there will be many cases of members not winning even a golf ball while losing a full shot off their handicaps. Such justice is kangaroo court fair! One Michael Fish reinstated his membership and immediately recorded 48pts to win Saturday B Grade. On the other side of the coin his handicap dropped from 24 to 16 on that very same day. Barry Topple continues to impress for the third week in a row. His 44pts only picked up a ball this time. Club Captain Neville Matthews has really taken the business of improving his golf ultra seriously and recorded a whopping 46pts on Sunday to pick up another victory. Saturday stableford A grade winner: Brett Cooper 41pts. His 24pts was four points clear of the very consistent Captain Jack Wales while Graham Howlett, Kevin Mann and Wilbur Whyte picked up a ball each for their efforts. Business House One-hundred-and-thirte en players voted with their golf clubs in a big show of support for the popular Business House summer daylight saving comp last Thursday and Friday. Ian takes a breather: Former GM speaks of his working life.
20 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM It wasn’t uncommon for Ian Lumsden to leave the office at 2am. You’d be hard pressed to find a man who put in as many hours as the former general manager and Goodradigbee Shire clerk. But it was all worth it, he insists. Ian served the community for 36-and-a-half years and describes the opening of the bypass as one of the most rewarding moments of his long career. By the time of his retirement in early 1998, Ian had become a somewhat master of all trades. He began his career in the Shoalhaven Shire and was in charge of the banking for the 15 smaller councils within the district. In 1961, he made the move to Yass. In hindsight, it was one of the best decisions of his life. Today Ian remains actively involved in the town as a dedicated member of Rotary and the treasurer of the Yass Golf Club. He took up the post of deputy Goodradigbee Shire clerk, a position he held for three years, before moving on to hold the mantle of Shire clerk. He was top dog in the clustered Rossi Street office, now home to Yass Valley Home Living Support Service. “It was extremely noisy with the tram tracks running straight past the office,” Ian recalled. “On and off the rail trucks used to roar straight past the building. It was quite off-putting.” In the 1960s, Yass was home to separate council entities. In Comur Street, there was the Yass Municipal Council, in charge of making sure the township ran smoothly. On the corner of Rossi and Dutton Streets was the Goodradigbee Shire headquarters. Staff at the Goodradigbee Shire were charged with maintaining the state of the district’s roads and looking after rural areas and villages like Bowning and Binalong. Life on the shire council was much less complicated in the 60s. There were no town planners and no health surveyors. If a resident felt like extending their house and constructing a verandah, there were no qualms, no questions asked. Ian held the position of Shire clerk from 1964 through to 1980, when the Municipal Council and Goodradigbee Shire amalgamated. According to Ian, Yass was a very different place in those days. “Canberra was a very small place. No one would think about driving to Canberra to work. Everyone who lived in Yass, worked in Yass,” he said. “We had about five fruit and veggies shops. As a town, we were self sufficient and didn’t rely on anyone else.” From 1980 through to 1993, Ian held the post of Yass Shire Clerk. He was at the top of the staff tree. The structure of the Shire was very similar to the makeup of council today. While all employees answered to Ian, he didn’t yield the most power. “In my day, the mayor made all the decisions. I was in charge of all the staff, but that was it. The mayor was the man,” he said. In 1993, local shires adopted the New Local Government Act, thus giving most of the responsibility back to the shire’s employees. Ian’s title changed from Shire clerk to General Manager. While his title bore more brunt, he’s job remained ever the same. From 1993 through to his retirement in 1998, Ian possessed a frightening work ethic. In the months leading up to the 1994 bypass, the GM often put in 15 hour days. All this while keeping a strong relationship with his three sons and trying to keep on top of his erratic diabetes, a condition thrust upon him in his early 20s. In the days before the Hume Highway bypass of Yass, cars had been known to be backed up as far north as Bowning, waiting for the traffic lights to turn green so they could inch their way forward. Ian believes the bypass has given the town a new lease of life. “It’s made the town a great place to live,” he said. “Initially the businesses thought they would suffer, but they’ve adapted and in many ways, thrived.” Ian is proud of what he has achieved. Today he remains active, enjoys a round of golf, a coffee at his favourite local cafe and takes pride in organising the annual Australia Day breakfast. Above all, he enjoys ‘relaxing’. And after 36 stressful years at the helm of the Shire, who could blame him?

Bray and Donnelly grab luck of the Irish
18 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM On Wednesday six teams of swingers took part in an Irish four ball worst ball format competition. Maureen Bray and Lynne Donnelly reigned supreme with 25 points. Other winners included Sheralee Sheedy, who finished nearest the pin and Jan Bluett, Lainie Eikenhout and Julia Genders, who each won a ball in the ball competition. Today, golfers will take part in a two person ambrose. The Club will celebrate the fine year gone by on Wednesday December 2 with a fun-filled novelty day. Those interested are invited to bring along three clubs for the 9am start. A Christmas luncheon will be held after nine holes. Bring a friend! Last Thursday, November 12, CSGA held their gala day at Braidwood. Congratulations to Vera Krizaic and Janet Bamford, who won fourth prize in the nett competition.

Tip-top Topple takes home trophy
13 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM Oh yes indeed! There are probably as many ways of saying it as the strokes he took to win it. Barry Topple made short work of a smaller than usual November Guzzlers field last Saturday when he claimed the pewter ware with his 92-35-57 to record his second victory in as many weeks. His 35 handicap is reduced to 31.4 but with 42 strokes only on the back nine last Saturday it would appear that Barry will have little difficulty with the new number. Well done Barry – the members will gladly re fill the mug for you during the pre Christmas month. Allan Golding won A Grade with his net 60 on a countback from Gary Butcher and Ben Burden was of the highest standard in his best gross score effort of 68 for a par round off the Pings. On the Sunday an increased field of thirty-one players enjoyed the beautiful weather and high scoring continued as the norm. Jim Aravanis maintained his good form and lost another shot off his handicap in recording a winning 43 stableford points. Vince Giuca lost a shot and moved up from the bottom rung in winning B Grade with 41pts. The old course is dry and fast with lots of run. The mid week tees are up so far that I am camera ready for the first player observed teeing off the first tee with a putter! (Bob Rogers November Guzzlers) The Guzzler: Barry Topple – best net score A grade: Allan Golding 77-17-60 B grade: Barry Topple 92-35-57 Best gross: Ben Burden 68 Nearest the pins: Rod Bullman 8th and John Bray 16th holes Ball comp to 65: A Golding, G Butcher, P Anderson, M Broers, B Burden, M Greep, M Marshall, J Goldsworthy, J Wales, R McDonald, P Brady, W Whyte Putting Comp: M Greep 26, J Watt 28. (Dad’s Army) The sanded and cored greens had Peter Boutcher closing his eyes and imagining that he was still reclining on a Gold Coast beach as he cruised to victory with 22pts in the Thursday hit out. Barry Topple gave clear indication of his coming big weekend as he accumulated 20pts for second spot and balls went to Bernie Puckett, Clive Phillips and Captain Jack Wales. (Business House Results) October 29 and 30: Brian Brooker was best in A grade with 29, Graham Howlett B grade with 29 and Paul Turner C grade with 28. Nearest the pins: E Mongan and B Brooker. November 5 and 6: Brett Cooper’s 29.5 was the best in A grade, while Mic O’Donnell’s 28 was top of the three in C Grade and Jan Burden, with 24.5 took out C grade honours. Nearest the pins: B Burden & G O’Brien. One-hundred-and-sixteen players took part and the winning teams were Triple Zero, Roches Transport and Golf Club Wackers. (Club House news) Daryl and Sheralee Sheedy wandered to Wagga Wagga Country Club on Monday October 26 and came home with the Don Atkinson Memorial Trophy in 4BBB competition. In local matchplay Brad Porter had a win against Phil White and will play the winner of the B Burden/R Camons match. Waiting for that outcome is Club champion Sam Porter, who had a win over Rob Dickson in the semi. The I and V Robertson Yass Open on Saturday December 1 will feature appearances by past champions. Invitations have already gone to Brian Brooker, John Hayes and Grant Keogh. Multiple champion and personality Rod Boyd and Mick Miller are also on the wanted list. Sam Porter was a notable absentee last Saturday – apparently his one and only weakness is slow and sandy greens! (Coming events) Sat Nov 14: Grand Final Retravision Ambrose Super Series Sat Nov 14: Individual Stableford for the other members and guests. Sun Nov 15: Individual Stableford.

C'mon girls, let the boys out to play
06 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM After four solid rounds of championship golf during the previous two weekends it was pretty obvious there were lots of IOUs called in by the ladies of the households this past weekend. Only 41 players fronted up on Saturday and on a beautiful Sunday there were only the 15 lonely souls. Please understand the boys don’t actually like being humiliated by that little white ball – they only do it for the sake of the old Club and someone has to use the beautiful piece of parkland. So come on. Please girls loosen the ties a little bit and you fellas just do the rest. Break free and run to the golf course because this Saturday the Bob Rogers Clothing Co puts up the loot for that so desired monthly prize, “The Guzzlers Mug”. There was a special piece of good news for our bachelor boy Captain Neville Matthews – he is now officially the ACT Monaro District Golf Association District Stableford Master Champion. How good is that and how did he do it you may ask! During last year, events were conducted throughout the district and Graham Fleming, Mark Barrie, Bob Johnson and our Captain Nev qualified to play in the district final at Belconnen last Sunday. Now you get the picture. Nev produced 39pts at the Belconnen layout and brought the title home to Yass. Well done esteemed Captain! (Weekend in brief) On Saturday the four ball-best-ball winners were Barry Topple and Clive Phillips with 50 whopping points. Nearest the Pins: Chris Simpson and Fran Kelly Ball Comp to 45: B Topple, C Phillips, R Johnson, W Scheffler, M O’Donnell, C Simpson, T Smith, R Watchorn, L Cox, B Greig, D Oldfield, P Anderson. Sunday Stableford: J Aravanis, W Wilson, E Mongan, D Morgan each won a ball. (Mid-week comp) Winner: Mic O’Donnell with 25pts from runner up Les Cox 23pts. Ball Comp to 20pts: K Reidy, D Genders, M Arnold, R Neilson, B Brooker, J Wales, K Mann, R Perceval, C Phillips, G Butcher. (Dad’s Army) The troops all had leave passes and turned out in Platoon strength last Thursday. Graham Howlett showed no big crowd nerves as he held off the fast finishing Clive Phillips to win by one – 21 to 20. Balls went to Bernie Puckett and Dudley Genders on 19pts, and in a five way countback it was Barry Topple and Allan Golding who picked up the other two on offer. (Matchplay reminder) The captain has had to make some executive decisions in regard to unplayed matches long overdue. In A Grade the following players need to get a move on: B Burden and R Camons, P White and B Porter, R Dickson and S Porter. In B Grade: T Mason and J Watt. Winner to play B Luff. In C Grade: K Stephan and N Matthews (final). * These competitions need to be finalised for presentations during the big Yass Open Weekend on December 5. (Full details next issue) (Pennant Teams) Nomination forms have been posted on the Club House notice boards for players wishing to be considered as pennant representatives for 2010 in the following divisions – * A Reserve * B Scratch * B Handicap * Masters Handicap * Junior * Encourage Shield Pictured: Nev Matthews, ACT Monaro District Golf Association Stableford Master Champion.

No Payne, no gain: In-form Trudy sweeps all before her
4/11/2009 4:00:00 AM Talented golfer Trudy Payne has collected most of the major awards at the Yass Women’s Golf Club Players Championship, held over the last two weeks. Payne shot the best score off the stick in A grade, carded the best gross score of all four rounds in any grade and fired the lowest net score in the first two rounds on top of receiving the Ruth Williams Memorial Trophy, awarded to the golfer with the lowest net score over all four rounds. Other golfers to shine included Gillian Storey, who finished with the best B grade gross and net scores as well as taking day one and two putting honours and finishing nearest the pin on day three. A grade runner-up, Sheralee Sheedy impressed, while Lainie Eikenhout received the Medal of Medals, awarded to the golfer boasting the best round one net score. The Club’s deep gratitude goes to Retravision Yass for their continued support. Special thanks must go to Matthew Waters, who was on hand to present the winners with their prizes. The Greenkeepers made sure the course was beautifully presented. Well done and thank you. Porter prevails
30/10/2009 4:00:00 AM Rather than the perfect Porter it was the grinding, determined ‘never say die’ Porter who prevailed by one shot in the final round of the Yass Earthmovers Yass Club Championship of 2009. Sam’s three over par 71 on the last day was best of the seeded group and made up his two shot deficit from a potentially fatal third round 75 – and he had the one winning shot to spare. Jamie Stanford had a longish putt on the last hole to force a play off - if Sammy was to miss his much shorter putt. They both missed and the 2009 Championship went to Sam Porter with his 71-69-75-71 – 286. Jamie recorded 74-71-68-74 – 287 and rising star Ben Burden shared the tournament low round of 68 in his 75-70-68-75 – 288 for third position. (The Old Course) Early in this piece we take opportunity to say thank you to all concerned for producing the grand old lady in wonderful condition. Despite prolonged drought, the ongoing dead tree removal program, shortage of staff, budget deficits and old equipment the course was a credit and was commended by all. Those who contributed are the silent minority but in particular all members pay special tribute to the tireless efforts of Vice President Phillip White for his organisational skills and hands on contribution. The efforts of the volunteer are still the underlying and fundamental foundations of the Australian way – may it always be so. The weather was about as perfect as could be ordered for an annual championship – even the forecast rain on the final day stayed in the heavens until the final putt dropped in the cup. I deviated - but now back to the championships! (Outstanding performers) There were some absolute standout performers at this year’s championships and in listing them for you I sincerely trust that no one is overlooked. (Jarrad Porter:) Jarrad started the championships with a handicap of 25 which he reduced to 21 by tournament end. His 88-87-82-87 – 344 gave him an average gross score of 86 and a winning C grade score that is lower than any in my memory. In winning a bag full of trophies Jarrad recorded an amazing net average of 60.00. (Matthew Lawrence:) In winning B Grade Matt produced his personal best ever score in the pressure fourth round of the championships. His 74 gross on the final day was preceded by 77 in the third round. He finished with a wonderful B Grade average of 79.75. (Leon Gold:) Leon’s net 62-63-63 was interrupted by a 70 in the second round. (Alex Walker:) Alex’s net 66-65-61 was marred by a slip up 74 in the second round. (Mark Partridge:) Mark’s bid to win the Masters division fell short by only three shots. His net 62-68-68-68 was terrific championship golf. (Tim Kelly): Tim is in career best form and he went agonisingly close to another Masters victory. A disappointing net 75 on the last day shipwrecked his other rounds of 61-65-67. (Michael Walker:) recent form leading in to the championships was maintained and Michael waltzed off with the Masters division. His 64-70-63-66 – 263 gave him a winning average of 65.75. (Tom Mason:) Tom started the championships with an outstanding 77 off the sticks and went on to win the Junior championship with 332 total and averaged 66.5 net. Congratulations to all the other golfers who played all four rounds and who met or bettered their aims. Commiserations to us others – as always, there’s next time! 21/10/2009 4:00:00 AM The first two really beautiful days of spring coincided with the first two days of the Yass Earthmovers Golf Club Championships at Worth Street. The sun shone and only a zephyr of wind rustled the early deciduous leaves as eighty hopefuls strutted their stuff over the 36 hole first weekend. And good endeavour was plentiful – especially on the Saturday. Young Tom Mason absolutely bolted clear of the B Grade contingent with a fantastic 77-18-59. Tim Kelly and Mark Barrie punched way above their weight with 73 off the Callaways to each of them. Mark Partridge, Jarrad Porter and Leon Gold made light work of their handicaps at six under 62s. In fact the scoring was so solid that it took 68 on a countback to win a ball in the ball competition. On the Sunday newly appointed Club Captain Nev Matthews celebrated in style with the lowest net of the day. His 61 was one better than the consistent Jarrad Porter with 62. Last year’s B Grade champion Wayne Wilson showed he has not forgotten how with his 63. Again it took a net 68 to have a chance of a ball in the ball comp. CCR was 65 on both days. The Overall Position in the Grades at the Halfway Mark Many time champion Sam Porter’s reliable golf game sees him with a five shot lead in the championship. His opening 71 was bettered by two shots on the Sunday (after narrowly missing his putt on the 18th green for a par round of 68). Jamie Stanford and Ben Burden are on 145 whilst Paul Matthews and Tim Smith are two shots further back. In B grade Tom Mason’s outstanding start on the Saturday was enough to ensure a six shot lead on Sunday night after he followed up with an 85 in the second round. Matthew Lawrence and Peter Brady are on 168 whilst Leon Gold and Brad Luff share the third line on 169. In C Grade it was the Jarrad Porter show with top of the leader board efforts on both days. His 175 is seven shots clear of Nev Matthews whilst Norm Napper sits on the third line at 184 and newly repaired Doug Oldfield has done very well to be next best at 189. The Junior championship is lead also by Tom Mason on 162 – seven shots clear of Brad Luff who has just returned from the National titles of his “other sport” Motocross where he finished a very impressive 10th overall. Next best is the “Pro Shop’s” Heydon McDonald on 174 and than comes Jarrad Porter on 175. In the net Masters Championship the bold striding Tim Kelly is out in front – but not by as many shots as I would have thought. Mark Partridge has snuck into 2nd spot with very little fanfare and sits just three shots back on 129. Next best is Michael Walker with his 133.
